Martvili Monastery

Martvili-Chkondidi Cathedral was built in the VII century, during the 10th century, King of Abkhazia Giorgi II, designated Martvili-Chkondidi Monastery as Episcopal center . Cathedral retained its name “Martvili” and bishops were called Chkondideli.

Martvili Monastery was considered a major educational center. It was residence of copyist monks. The books were translated, works were created.

According to "Life of Kartli" (Kartlis Tskhovreba), it is the final resting place of King Bagrat IV .

Martvili Monasterial Complex has a strategic geographic location from where most of Imereti-Samegrelo can be seen. It is surrounded by walls. The main Cathedral is named "Blessed Vergin Repose Cathedral". Some of 14th, 16th, and 17th century frescos are still preserved in the Cathedral. There is Martvili Virgin Mary- perfect piece of art. To the north of the Catherdral there is a miniature stone church which is called Church of Chikvanebi.

Off to the west there is a tall tower which was place of prayer and worship for many receive blessings from the Stylite monk as late as the beginning of the 20th century.

In terms of planning Martvili Cathedral is very similar to Jvari (Holy Cross) Monastery in Mtskheta, but not repeating it. Here, the architect used free interpretation of the theme and actually created an original art work.
